This year the Slow Reading Discussion Group will be continuing its close study of works that explore, from a variety of perspectives, the rich theme of displacement.

This year the Slow Reading Discussion Group will be continuing its close study of works that explore, from a variety of perspectives, the rich theme of displacement. Leading the group is Ellen Lambert, who has a Ph.D. from Yale and taught high school English at The Dalton School for over 25 years. Texts will include Javier Zamora's memoir Solito, Jhumpa Lahiri's novel The Namesake, Christy Lefteri's novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo, and Arundhati Roy's novel The God of Small Things.

The first book to be discussed will be the stunning 2023 memoir Solito, by the American-Salvadoran writer Javier Zamora. Solito takes us on the journey of the nine-year-old Javier--one of a group of migrants that does not include any members of his own family--as they make their way from a small town in El Salvador to La USA. Written in the voice of his nine-year-old self, Zamora describes in vivid detail the hopes and fears and complex attachments that develop in the course of his journey.

For this meeting, please read chapters 1 - 3 (pp. 3 - 104).
